In The Story of a Stone, I used satire by digging a hole and building a fictional narrative around a non-existent stone. To me, stone is a primal material charged with symbolism and mystery. Inspired by the opening of Dream of the Red Chamber (Cao Xueqin and Hawkes, 1973), I explored how imbuing meaning into emptiness—even just a hole—can evoke a sense of profound absurdity. As in Dream of the Red Chamber: ‘When falsehood is accepted as truth, truth itself becomes false, In nothingness, there is somewhere, and in somewhere, there is nothing.’
